How to Replace an audi a1 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

happy-smiling-woman-with-car-key-driving-2022-11-17-00-15-14-utc-min-scaled.jpgIn this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC, and where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector, and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, three were drenched in gazoline, the fourth one was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I get zero Ohm. I think the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem persists at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do, as i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. However, i'm afraid that I might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the audi spare keys in a salvage shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and test the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to be aware of the position and speed the crankshaft to determine timing of fuel injectors, audikey etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox and a gearbox which shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you notice any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially in the case of an Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's a crucial component of the transmission in your audi new key, as it transmits information to the ECU on how fast or slowly the car's engine is spinning. If the sensor fails, it can cause problems for the transmission and the other car's components.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located at the outside of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49 via an uncolored wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can determine if the sensor is in failure by examining the continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. You can also check continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]), and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. There should be the resistance to be around 1000 ohms between these points. This is the same across the audi key replacement cost 80-100-200-RS2 range, from the 1985 MC up to the 1997 UrS AN and 1995 RS2 DU, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
