How to Replace an replacement audi a3 key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

happy-smiling-woman-with-car-key-driving-2022-11-17-00-15-14-utc-min-scaled.jpgCharles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control the amount of fuel and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are different connector pins, and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a massive drop in power. It was as if the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When i crank the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 that were drenched in gazoline leap out, however the 4th stays shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is disconnected and runs fine when it is plugged in, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i believe that i've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is simple to test them: simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing upwards). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines must know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner that can lead to engine shutdown.

A malfunctioning G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. They are cheap and easy-to-find, especially if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, GM's version cost of audi key replacement this component is an excellent choice.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind many issues in your vehicle. It's an essential component of the audi etron key's transmission since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is rotating. This sensor could cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

happy-african-american-businessman-holding-car-key-2022-12-16-16-36-17-utc-min-scaled.jpgThe G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It transmits signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU then processes this signal to control fuel, timig and boost and then transmitting it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test for sensor failure by checking continuity from the sensor to the tachometer. Also, you can verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 as well as pin T26a/12. You should detect an average resistance of 1000 ohms between these points. This is a standard part that is found across the audi q3 key 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC to the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU so good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
