How to Replace an audi smart key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

key-from-new-car-2021-08-29-05-15-15-utc-min-scaled.jpgCharles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

jaguar-logo.png1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU utilizes this information to control boost and fuel. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display an error code P00160. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector and each has its own functions. The best method for doing this is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th stay shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I get zero ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it works fine when the G28 plugged in. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. Also i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. Please let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. It is easy to test them: simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that has to know the position and replacement audi key cost uk speed of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If either of these go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can cause the engine to shut down.

A damaged G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox and a gearbox which shifts more quickly than normal, audi key fob replacement cost and/or a misfire while in the gear. It is likely that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good news is they are very affordable and easily accessible particularly when you're looking at a Bosch model, which is what ours are. You can also choose the GM version of this component is also a great option.

5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a myriad of issues in your car. It's an essential component of your audi car key holder's transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is spinning. This sensor can cause the transmission to fail and other components of the car to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear and transmits a signal to the ECU at pin T55/49 through a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to control the flow of fuel and boost as well as timig. It also transmits it to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster. You can test the sensor for failure by checking continuity between it and the tachometer. You can also check continuity between ECU pin T55/49 and Audi A3 Replacement Key the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common part across the Replacement audi key cost 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 range from 1985 MC until the 1997 UrS AAN and 1995 RS2 ADU. Good ones might be availble in wrecking yards.
